A Gewehr 98 from the Danzig arsenal, serial 4181m, made in 1917 in 8mm Mauser with a 29 1/2-inch round barrel. The receiver carries the 1920 property stamp beside the original date, which marks reissue to the German army of the Weimar years and gives the rifle its double-date name. It was refinished during its service life, the serial numbers do not match, the stock is good with little handling wear, the bore is good with strong rifling and the bolt runs smoothly and functions correctly.
Rifles of this type are not deer guns in Massachusetts, where only shotguns and muzzleloaders may be used, so this Gew. 98 is for the military collector or the shooter who likes a full-length Mauser on the hundred-yard line. The non-matching numbers and arsenal refinish are normal for a rifle that was kept in service and rebuilt after the first war, and they make it an honest example of its kind rather than a disappointment.
