A Pattern 1853 rifled musket in .577 from Nepalese service, built in the 1850s and carrying no serial number. The 33 1/2-inch round barrel has a smooth grey patina with light surface oxidation, and its markings translate roughly as In the year J/28. The brass trigger guard and nose cap have aged to a soft patina. The stock was refurbished at some stage and is smooth, with light handling impressions. The lock holds at both half and full cock.
The seller calls it a solid example rather than a pristine one, and that is a fair description of a working musket that spent its life in Nepal. In Massachusetts it is a collector's long gun. Its .577 bore technically sits within the .44 to .775 muzzleloader window the state uses for the primitive firearms season, which runs from the third Monday after Thanksgiving to December 31, but most buyers will keep an original of this age for display and the occasional range outing.
